10 questions with Kalacreative

1. How did you become a designer?

My interest in design probably started back when I was in middle school. At that time, I came across local music cassette/CD albums for the first time, and I was really captivated by the typography and layout — they looked so visually appealing to me.

However, I didn’t know anything about the profession of graphic design back then. It wasn’t until high school that life somehow led me to discover this field. That moment pushed me to pursue a degree in Visual Communication Design so I could learn more about it. And even now, I’m still learning and growing in this journey.

2. Any funny superstitions or must-dos before you start designing?

I think the way I design is similar to how most people do, but I find it hard to concentrate when there’s music playing or any kind of noise around me. I prefer designing in a calm and quiet environment.

3. If your design style had a personality, how would you describe it?

My design personality is like that of an adventurous soul. Someone who loves new and spontaneous things, wanders from place to place, learns from everything around them, enjoys exploring uncharted ideas, and dares to step out of their comfort zone.

4. What are some of your go-to tools, fonts, or features on Kittl?

Honestly, I really love the features in Kittl. Especially the vector tools. I think that feature is absolutely amazing and incredibly helpful when I’m designing.

5. What made you join the Kittl Creator Program, and what’s been your favorite part so far?

When I first discovered Kittl, I was truly impressed by its features. I think Kittl has made a lot of breakthroughs up to this point. Coincidentally, I’ve also always been interested in T-shirt artwork design, and that sparked a strong desire in me to join and learn creatively as part of the Kittl community.

My favorite part would probably be when I get the chance to create T-shirt artwork, especially because I have a big interest in fashion. I love exploring vintage T-shirt designs and transforming them into fresh, relevant designs.

6. What’s a dream project you’d love to work on in the future — no limits?

In this era of rapidly advancing technology, I strive to create things that are more humanistic. I want to make work that humanizes people and resonates with real human experiences.

7. What’s one design tip or mindset you’d share with designers out there?

Right now, I’m learning to avoid consuming the same things that most people do whether it’s design references, music, or other stuff. I’ve realized that a lot of what we consume daily is often just the result of algorithms based on what we frequently click and ads we’ve been shown, and many of us don’t even realize it.

8. What’s one new skill or design technique you’ve been wanting to learn or master?

I want to learn to always create a narrative or story behind every design I make — to create designs that have impact, not just aesthetically pleasing, but also grounded in data and driven by meaningful ideas I come up with.

9. Where do you usually get your inspiration — any weird or surprising sources?

I love saving interesting things on my Pinterest. I often try to break the algorithm so that my feed doesn’t always show the same types of designs. When I travel, I also like to capture moments or things that leave an impression on me. I call these things my visual bank, something I can look back on whenever I need visual inspiration.

10. You’ve created some incredible work — what’s a recent design you’re proud of, and what inspired it?

One of my recent designs that I’m proud of is a series of minimalist vintage T-shirt artworks. The inspiration came from my personal visual bank of vintage T-shirt designs, which I reinterpreted and transformed into something new and more relevant for today’s style.
